Honda Aircraft Company’s headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, is about to get bigger. According to a recent press release from the company, Honda Aircraft intends to invest a further $15.5 million into the facility, with the money going towards the construction of a new 82,000 square-foot structure on the 133+ acre Greensboro campus.

Honda says that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new project is scheduled for July 2019 and aims to complete the work by July 2020. Should this plan go through, the company’s total investment in the North Carolina facility will rise to over $245 million!

Meeting Production and Operating Efficiency Goals

According to Honda Aircraft Company President and CEO Michimasa Fujino, the expansion is aimed at meeting the company’s global production and operating efficiency goals. Speaking after the announcement was made, Fujino said that Honda’s popularity around the world keeps growing and it was only right that the company expanded its footprint in the aviation industry.

“As the popularity of Honda Jet continues to increase globally, it is important that we build facilities to meet our production and service goals so that we can operate at the highest level of efficiency,” said Fujino. “We are proud that we’ll be expanding our footprint in the North Carolina aviation industry.”

The new building will house a new wing assembly process for the HondaJet Elite, Honda Aircraft’s luxury aircraft described as the “fastest, highest, and farthest-flying plane in its class.” It will also give the company additional space to assemble more wings at the same time, thus boosting efficiency.

Huge Boost for the Local and Regional Economy

News of the expansion has been received with joy and excitement among local as well as state and national leaders. Speaking following the announcement, everyone was full of praise for Honda Aircraft and expressed their elation about the potential boost to the Greensboro economy.

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), for example, believes that Honda Aircraft Company has done a commendable job in the region already and the additional investment would endear them further to North Carolina locals.

“Honda Aircraft has already invested millions of dollars and created thousands of jobs in the Greensboro region,” he said in a statement. “The expansion of the headquarters is huge news for North Carolina families.”

US Representative Ted Budd (R-NC) is another leader who has congratulated Honda Aircraft for the stellar job they’re doing in North Carolina. In his statement, Budd says he hopes other investors follow suit.

“Honda Aircraft Company's announcement today that they are expanding their headquarters in Greensboro is huge news for Guilford County,” he said. “This new $15.5 million investment shows that our area is a place where businesses thrive.”

Governor Roy Cooper (D-NC), on his part, believes this is just the start. According to the Governor, North Carolina is one of the best places to do business in the country, especially for those in the aviation industry, and more investors will be joining the queue.

“The Honda Aircraft Company story is a great example of manufacturers enjoying doing their business in North Carolina,” he said. “The new expansion is a testament to our commitment to the aerospace industry and North Carolina’s economic development in general.”
