JPL’s Earth Science Public Engagement Office is seeking an individual to be part of a dynamic team, to grow the social media presence and digital products for NASA/JPL Earth Science missions. Responsibilities Work with JPL Earth Public Engagement staff and NASA’s thematic Earth communications team to sustain and grow the social media presence and produce digital and print products for NASA Earth Science.
Social Media
Lead NASA Earth social media efforts using creative and copy-editing skills to ensure concise, accurate, interesting and appealing content to appropriate social media platforms. Craft, produce, schedule and manage day-to-day social media content, including current news, features, campaign priorities, live streamed events and multimedia posts Examine data and analytics to improve understanding of social channels and communities, measure engagement, prepare reports and provide strategic recommendations Content Production Interact with experts to translate complex, wide-ranging, technical material into communications products easily understandable by the public Plan, coordinate, and build digital content including, but not limited to, videos, shareable images, animated gifs, social stories, etc. Oversee print product design and production for organization with managers and/or staff that have responsibility for results, including costs Provide writing, content authoring and copy editing as required Web Manage regular review of section, pages, navigation, and use of mission websites. Update websites via content management systems as required. Public Engagement Represent JPL/NASA communication initiatives at professional conferences and public events when necessary Collaborate with Business Partners Collaborate across diverse teams to create innovative new initiatives that lead to expanded impact Plan coordinated messaging and activities with partners at NASA Headquarters and other centers and with university and science center partners as necessary
Qualifications This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: journalism, communications, media, public relations, advertising, science writing, or an Earth science-related field, along with 6 years of related experience or a Master’s degree with 3 years of related experience.
Required: Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software for print, publishing and video editing. Verifiable experience engaging the public across multiple social media platforms via frequent posting, live video production, story creation, follower interaction and comment moderation Demonstrated writing, content authoring and copy-editing skills Knowledge of website content management systems Knowledge of print product design, content sourcing and production process Demonstrated experience working with multiple partners in large organizations and providing leadership and coaching to individual team members Preferred Qualifications: Works independently on key projects and assignments with limited direction Content creation experience for corporate, government or non-profit social media accounts Keen interest in Earth science research including climate, natural disasters and weather Previous outreach/web/writing experience, especially with NASA or other government agency, is highly desired. Portfolio: Links to managed and/or personal social media accounts Writing links or samples. Additional creative samples encouraged.
